BC ICBC MVA Counselling

A powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain heal from trauma, distressing memories, and overwhelming emotional experiences.

EMDR is a structured therapeutic approach designed to process painful memories, reduce emotional distress, and help you move forward with clarity and confidence. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) to support your brain’s natural healing process, allowing stuck or traumatic experiences to be reprocessed in a safe and controlled way.

This approach is widely used for PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, panic, chronic stress, childhood trauma, phobias, grief, and emotional triggers. EMDR is also a preferred treatment for people who have difficulty talking about trauma or who feel “stuck” after other therapy methods.

How EMDR Therapy Works

A powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain heal from trauma, distressing memories, and overwhelming emotional experiences.

EMDR follows an eight-phase model grounded in neuroscience and memory processing. Your therapist guides you through each stage at a safe, comfortable pace.

1. History & Treatment Planning

We explore your goals, triggers, and identified memories or experiences that feel “stuck.”

2. Preparation & Stabilization

We build coping tools, grounding strategies, and emotional safety before beginning processing.

3. Assessment

We identify the target memory, body sensations, emotions, and negative beliefs connected to it.

4. Desensitization (Bilateral Stimulation)

Eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones help the brain process memories without overwhelm.

5. Installation of Positive Beliefs

We strengthen new, healthier thoughts to replace old trauma-driven beliefs.

6. Body Scan

We check how the memory feels in your body and process any lingering sensations.

7. Closure

You leave each session grounded, safe, and emotionally regulated.

8. Re-evaluation

We review your progress and identify next steps at each new session.

EMDR is not about “reliving” trauma. It helps you reduce emotional intensity so memories lose their power over you.

FAQ

1. Does EMDR really work?

Yes. EMDR is strongly supported by research and recommended by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) for trauma treatment.

2. Do I need to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. EMDR does not require detailed retelling, making it ideal for clients who find storytelling overwhelming or retraumatizing.

3. How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some clients process a single event in 6–10 sessions; complex trauma may require longer-term work.

4. Is EMDR safe online?

Yes. EMDR can be delivered effectively through secure video using visual or auditory bilateral stimulation.

5. Will I feel overwhelmed or activated?

Your therapist will pace the work carefully and prepare grounding tools to help you remain regulated and safe.

6. Can EMDR help with anxiety or panic attacks?

Absolutely. EMDR can target both the past events that created the anxiety and the beliefs that maintain it.
